hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2.0.0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span>1st Cycle Ewes.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Approximately 15 years ago I heard Mr Bruce Farquarson speak at a function at Cooma Rural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>Bruce was a Veterinarian employed by MERIAL Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His presentation was in regards to the pressure Drench Companies were faced with in developing next generation sheep drenches in response to increasing worm resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The presentation was suggestions for ON FARM management practices to combat worms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>The major management change\u00a0 he suggested, based from his research, was to implement\u00a0 joining Merino ewes for 21 days only. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>with adequate healthy rams *85 % of ewes conceive in the first 21 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A 21 day lambing period enables<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Lambs born within 21 days are\u201d better covered\u2019\u2019 from pre lambing drench.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Shorter lambing period provides smaller lambs for pick up at marking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Earlier drenching and rotation of paddocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Better management for weaning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Better feeding management for drought or marketing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>1st Cycle ewes repeat themselves into their next generation daughters. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Lambs born in the 2nd cycle are born into increasingly contaminated paddocks and from birth ingest worms which has a negative\u00a0 impact on their lifetime production.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>He referred to 2nd cycle lambs as 2nd cycle whole of life worm burdens. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>His suggestion if 2nd cycle joining was required was to use black Suffolk rams .<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Easy to identify, Most farmers prepared to wean into the sale yards and if retained on farm they would leave your farm for better pasture elsewhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/span><span><\/span><span>With single sire joining it is risky to join for 21 days without back up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A different color tag is the management option I use for smaller\/later lambs at marking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bruce\u2019s closing comment was 1st CYCLE EWES JUST DO IT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>e.g. My Doolondondale ewes 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Single sire for approximately 21 days, then back up rams for approx. 9 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>507 scanned including 254 maidens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>490 scanned in lamb by MG sheep scanning service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>17 dry included 8 maiden ewes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Michael Green.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Boudjah Merinos.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boudjah EwesPaternal grand daughters of One Oak NationalEwes by GlendonaldHalf sisters to wethers in Cavern Station sire evaluationThese photos were taken in June 2019 at Doolondondale.
